Jan Suraaj Party founder Prashant Kishor has announced five candidates for the upcoming Bihar Legislative Council elections, with polls expected to be announced soon. The elections will cover eight Council constituencies whose terms are due to expire in November.
The eight seats include four graduates’ constituencies and four teachers’ constituencies spread across around 30 districts of Bihar. The elections are separate from the Bihar Assembly polls and are held to elect members of the state’s Legislative Council.
Kishor announced the candidates at a press conference on Sunday. Afaq Ahmed has been named for the Saran teachers’ constituency and will seek re-election from the seat. Ahmed is the incumbent member and had won the constituency six years ago with Kishor’s support before the formation of the Jan Suraaj Party.
Divya Jyoti, a lawyer and academician-turned-politician who joined Jan Suraaj last week, has been fielded from the Patna teachers’ constituency. The seat is currently represented by JD(U) spokesperson Neeraj Kumar.
The party has also nominated S P Rai from the Darbhanga teachers’ constituency, Ravindra Yadav from the Darbhanga graduates’ constituency and Rajnish Ranjan from the Kosi graduates’ constituency.
Jan Suraaj had earlier indicated that it intended to contest all eight Council seats. The party’s decision to field candidates across both graduates’ and teachers’ constituencies comes as it continues to expand its political organisation in Bihar.
The upcoming Council elections will involve a distinct electorate from regular Assembly elections. Graduate and teacher voters will participate in their respective constituencies, making local organisational networks and candidate support important parts of the electoral process.
Kishor also spoke recently about political representation for minorities in Bihar. Addressing a minorities convention in Patna, he called for greater political representation and urged different social groups to focus on their communities’ interests rather than remaining aligned with any particular political party.
The Jan Suraaj Party, founded by Kishor in 2024, has been seeking to expand its presence in Bihar through an agenda centred on issues such as education, employment, governance and social representation.
With five candidates now announced, attention will turn to the remaining three constituencies and the formal election schedule from the Election Commission.
