A 26-year-old woman was seriously injured after a man allegedly threw petrol on her and set her on fire at a government hospital in Tiruvallur, Tamil Nadu, on Monday night, police said. The victim, who worked as a temporary employee at the hospital, was later shifted to a government medical college hospital in Chennai for treatment.
According to police, the incident took place at the district government hospital in Tiruvallur late on Monday. The attacker allegedly approached the woman and poured petrol on her before setting her ablaze. The exact circumstances leading to the attack are being investigated.
Police identified the accused as Prakash, 35. After the incident, he allegedly fled from the hospital. Police launched an operation to trace him and subsequently located him in Madhavaram in the early hours of Tuesday.
During the arrest attempt, Prakash allegedly tried to attack police personnel with a sickle. Police said they fired at him, hitting him in the right leg. He was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment.
Police are questioning the accused to establish the motive behind the attack and determine what led to the confrontation at the hospital.
The injured woman was initially treated at the Tiruvallur government hospital before being shifted to Kilpauk Government Medical College Hospital in Chennai. Her condition and the extent of her injuries are being assessed by doctors.
Investigators are also examining evidence from the hospital and surrounding areas as part of the probe. Further details about the relationship, if any, between the accused and the victim have not been established by police at this stage.
