The Indian High Commission in Kuala Lumpur has warned Indian nationals against using Malaysia’s 30-day visa-free entry facility to look for employment, saying doing so would violate Malaysian immigration rules.
The advisory comes amid what the High Commission described as a noticeable increase in Indian nationals travelling to Malaysia under the visa-free arrangement with the intention of finding jobs. The mission said several travellers were allegedly being misled by unscrupulous agents who make false promises of employment.
According to the High Commission, Indian passport holders can use the visa-free facility for tourism and social visits for stays of up to 30 days, subject to applicable entry requirements. The facility does not permit travellers to take up employment in Malaysia.
The mission warned that people travelling to Malaysia without the required work authorisation could face several difficulties, including overstaying, being placed in an illegal immigration status, exploitation, detention and legal action.
“Indian nationals are strictly advised not to travel to Malaysia for work / employment purpose without work permit or visa with reference (VDR),” the advisory said.
The High Commission also advised genuine tourists to carry valid and verifiable documents when travelling to Malaysia. Travellers should have a confirmed return ticket, accommodation details and a passport with at least six months of validity.
Indian travellers are also required to complete the Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC) within the stipulated period before arrival. The advisory said travellers should ensure that all information and documents submitted to immigration authorities are accurate and verifiable.
Malaysia’s Immigration Department has stated that Indian citizens are exempt from visa requirements until December 31, 2026, under the applicable arrangement. However, the visa exemption is subject to the purpose and conditions of entry.
Travellers visiting Malaysia for purposes such as employment or education are required to obtain the appropriate visa, pass or other authorisation before travelling.
The High Commission advised Indian nationals to check the latest immigration requirements before departure and ensure they have all necessary documents ready. Those travelling for work were specifically advised to secure the required work permit or visa with reference before entering the country.
The advisory also urged travellers to be cautious of agents offering employment opportunities in Malaysia. The mission said false job promises can leave people vulnerable to exploitation and immigration-related problems.
Indian nationals planning to visit Malaysia for tourism or social purposes should therefore ensure that their travel documents, return tickets, accommodation details and arrival-card requirements are in order.
For those seeking employment, the High Commission reiterated that entering Malaysia under the tourist visa-free arrangement is not a substitute for obtaining the appropriate work authorisation. Employment-related travel must comply with Malaysian immigration rules.
