Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay is set to flag off the upcoming Le Mans Cup race at Silverstone in the UK, where actor-turned-racing driver Ajith Kumar will compete. The development has surprised fans because of the long-standing perception of a rivalry between the two Tamil cinema stars.
Vijay and Ajith have been major names in the Tamil film industry for more than three decades. Their respective fan groups have frequently clashed online and, at times, in public. The two actors themselves, however, have repeatedly maintained that there is no personal rivalry between them.
The Le Mans Cup’s official social media account announced that Vijay would be the special guest at the Silverstone round. The organisers said the Tamil Nadu chief minister would wave the ceremonial green flag and support Indian drivers competing in the UK.
The event is expected to feature a 44-car grid, with the race scheduled to take place at Silverstone this weekend.
Ajith Kumar’s racing team has also confirmed his participation. The team shared a video from the Silverstone circuit showing preparations ahead of the race, including drivers and crew studying the track, its corners, braking zones and other details.
The announcement quickly became a talking point among fans of both actors. Many social media users joked about how unexpected it would have seemed years ago to see Vijay and Ajith associated with the same sporting event.
For decades, Vijay’s fans and Ajith’s fans have engaged in heated exchanges, particularly around the release of their films and their respective box-office performances. The fan groups even have rival nicknames for each other, reflecting the intensity of the competition between them.
However, the latest development has also led many fans to celebrate the possibility of the two camps putting aside their differences. Several users described the event as a moment that could help bring an end to years of fan rivalry.
The actors themselves have generally played down suggestions of personal animosity. In February, Shalini Ajith Kumar spoke about their relationship and said the two were happy for each other’s success.
Ajith has also previously said that he wishes Vijay well, further suggesting that the rivalry is largely driven by their fan bases rather than the actors themselves.
Vijay’s appearance at Silverstone comes during his first overseas visit since becoming Tamil Nadu chief minister. His visit is focused partly on investments and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s links with the UK.
With Ajith competing on the track and Vijay waving the starting flag, the Silverstone event is now attracting attention far beyond motorsport.
