News Desk: Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu will lead India's challenge at the 2026 World Weightlifting Championships, which begin on October 27 in Ningbo, China. The competition will run until November 8 and marks an important step in the qualification journey for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
The championships will take place at the Ningbo Olympic Sports Centre, with more than 500 athletes expected to participate. Indian fans will also be able to follow the competition through live streaming.
Mirabai, 32, will compete in the women's 53kg category as she begins her campaign in a new weight division for the current Olympic cycle. She won silver in the women's 49kg category at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and also competed in the same division at Paris 2024.
However, the 49kg category has been removed from the weightlifting programme for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics, prompting her move to the 53kg division.
Important Step Towards Paris 2028? No, Los Angeles 2028
The Ningbo championships are the first of 10 qualifying events on the road to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. Results achieved during the qualification period will play a significant role in determining which athletes secure Olympic quota places.
Under the qualification system, weightlifters must register three total results during the first qualification period and two during the second, all within the same Olympic weight category. Each total combines an athlete's best successful lifts in the snatch and clean and jerk.
The Olympic Qualification Ranking will consider an athlete's three best totals from the first period and two best totals from the second. Each kilogram lifted counts as one ranking point.
At the end of the qualification process, the top eight eligible weightlifters in each Olympic weight category will secure quota places allocated to them by name.
India's Squad for the Championships
India will field five lifters across the men's and women's events at the competition.
The women's team includes Mirabai Chanu and Gyaneshwari Yadav in the 53kg category, Usha in the 61kg category, and Nirupama Devi Seram, also in the 61kg category.
Lovepreet Singh will represent India in the men's 110kg category.
Mirabai's performance will attract particular attention as she adapts to the 53kg division and begins building her qualification record for the next Olympics. Her experience on the international stage will be an important part of India's campaign.
With the qualification race now beginning, the championships offer Indian weightlifters an opportunity to test themselves against leading competitors from around the world and establish their positions in the journey towards Los Angeles 2028.
