Retired Army Captain Arrested in Tamil Nadu Over Alleged Defence Information Leak

A 52-year-old retired Indian Army captain has been arrested in Tamil Nadu over allegations that he shared sensitive defence-related information with a woman he was reportedly in a relationship with. Investigators suspect that the information may have been linked to the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), and are examining whether it was passed on to any other individuals.

The accused, identified as Babu, was arrested in the Vellore region following intelligence inputs received by the police. According to investigators, the woman may have used the relationship to obtain sensitive information about India's defence establishment. However, her identity and nationality have not yet been established.

A senior police officer said that sharing such sensitive information was a serious matter. The officer also confirmed that investigators were trying to determine the nature of the information allegedly disclosed and whether it reached any foreign intelligence network.

How the Investigation Began

The arrest followed intelligence inputs involving local intelligence personnel and other agencies. Babu was reportedly traced to a hideout near Arani in Tiruvannamalai district, close to Vellore.

According to the information available to investigators, Babu served as a captain in the Indian Army's artillery regiment before retiring in 1994. His military background and subsequent association with DRDO are now being examined as part of the investigation.

Police are investigating the circumstances in which the alleged information was shared, including the communications between Babu and the woman.

Woman's Identity Yet to Be Confirmed

Investigators have not established whether the woman is a foreign national. When asked whether she was from Pakistan, a senior police officer said that the authorities were not certain and would seek relevant technical details from WhatsApp to help establish her identity and trace the communications.

The police are also examining whether the alleged information-sharing was an isolated incident or part of a wider network.

Following his arrest, Babu was handed over to central investigative authorities for further questioning and investigation. His digital records and communications are expected to be scrutinised to determine the extent of the alleged disclosure.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are yet to establish the woman's identity, the precise nature of the information involved or whether it was shared with any foreign entity. The allegations against the retired officer remain subject to investigation.
