Dorothy Gets Standing Ovation at TIFF

Karthik Subbaraj’s Tamil film Dorothy received an enthusiastic response at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), where it had its world premiere in the Centrepiece category. The film earned a standing ovation from the audience at the Scotiabank Theatre, marking a major international moment for the upcoming Tamil-language feature.

The premiere was attended by members of the film’s cast and crew, including lead actor Keerthy Suresh, Sananth and Rishikanth. Producers Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain were also present. Videos from the screening and the team’s interaction with the audience later surfaced on social media.

Dorothy is notable for being the first Tamil film to premiere at the acclaimed festival in around a decade. The film has been selected for TIFF’s international programme, which brings together prominent filmmakers, festival favourites and anticipated world premieres from different parts of the globe.

The movie features an original score by veteran composer Ilaiyaraaja, marking his 1540th film. It is backed by Jio Studios and Sikhya Entertainment.

Director Karthik Subbaraj said the film had been with him for a long time and was inspired by a world he knows closely. He described the story as one centred on friendship, love and tenderness, while also exploring themes such as identity, caste, masculinity and compassion. According to Subbaraj, although the film is deeply rooted in the culture and landscape of Tamil Nadu, its emotional themes are universal.

The film’s producers also expressed their excitement about bringing Subbaraj’s long-developed vision to an international audience. They praised his storytelling and said they were proud to support the film’s journey at TIFF.

Following its festival premiere, Dorothy is scheduled to have a worldwide theatrical release on September 25. The positive response at TIFF has added further attention to the film ahead of its global release.
