What does it take to live beyond 100? The lifestyle of Spanish supercentenarian Maria Branyas Morera has drawn attention after Dr Prasun Chatterjee, a geriatric medicine specialist at Apollo Hospitals, highlighted some of the habits that may have contributed to her extraordinary longevity.

Maria Branyas Morera lived for 117 years and 168 days. Born on March 4, 1907, in San Francisco, she later moved to Spain with her family. She became the world’s oldest living person in January 2023 and died peacefully in her sleep in Olot, Catalonia, on August 19, 2024.

According to Dr Chatterjee, Maria followed a relatively simple lifestyle. Her regular diet reportedly included yoghurt, fresh fish and fresh vegetables, while she generally ate three meals a day.

Gut health was another area highlighted by the doctor. Dr Chatterjee said scientists had found that Maria’s gut microbiome had characteristics similar to that of an infant. Researchers have been exploring whether this unusual gut profile could have played a role in her longevity.

He also discussed beneficial bacteria such as Bifidobacterium, which are naturally found in the gut. Yoghurt can contain certain beneficial bacteria, although the doctor’s comments should not be interpreted as proof that eating yoghurt can make someone live to 117.

Maria’s approach to emotional well-being was another important part of the discussion. According to Dr Chatterjee, she tried to stay away from people she considered toxic and maintained hobbies that brought her happiness. She also learned to play the piano and continued to focus on positive experiences.

Sleep and emotional health were also reportedly important aspects of her routine. Even towards the end of her life, Maria maintained a positive outlook and communicated with her followers online.

Her story has renewed interest in the factors that may influence healthy ageing. However, experts caution against viewing the lifestyle of one exceptionally long-lived person as a guaranteed formula for longevity. Genetics, environment, healthcare, lifestyle, social connections and many other factors can influence how long and how healthily a person lives.

Maria’s case is particularly remarkable because she was among the oldest people whose age has been independently verified. She celebrated her 117th birthday in March 2024 before passing away later that year.

While there is no single recipe for reaching 100 or beyond, her story highlights the potential importance of a balanced diet, regular sleep, emotional well-being, social and personal interests, and maintaining good overall health throughout life.
