Daily Almond Consumption May Improve Sleep Quality, Study Finds

A study published in Frontiers in Nutrition in July 2026 suggests that consuming almonds daily may help adults with poor sleep quality fall asleep faster and sleep longer. Although almonds contain nutrients associated with normal nervous system function and sleep-related processes, researchers say further evidence is needed. Almonds may complement healthy sleep habits but should not be considered a guaranteed treatment for insomnia.

News Desk: Eating almonds every day may help adults fall asleep faster and enjoy longer, more restful sleep, according to a study published in Frontiers in Nutrition in July 2026. The findings suggest that this popular nut could be a useful addition to a balanced diet for people looking to improve their sleep habits.

Sleep difficulties have become increasingly common as stress, busy schedules and excessive screen time affect people’s ability to relax at night. While reducing evening caffeine intake and maintaining a regular bedtime are widely recommended, researchers are also exploring how everyday foods may influence sleep quality.

The study involved 175 adults aged between 21 and 55 who reported poor sleep quality. Participants were given either 60 grams of almonds daily or a calorie-matched control snack, such as chivda, khakhra or crackers. According to the reported findings, those who consumed almonds experienced improvements in how quickly they fell asleep and the amount of time they slept.

The results indicate that almonds may help support better rest, although further research is needed to establish how consistently these benefits occur and whether they apply to different age groups.

How can almonds support better sleep?

Almonds contain several nutrients that play important roles in normal bodily functions, including magnesium and tryptophan. Magnesium supports normal nerve and muscle function, while tryptophan is an amino acid that the body uses to produce serotonin, which is involved in mood regulation and sleep-related processes.

The body can also use serotonin to produce melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate the sleep-wake cycle. Almonds naturally contain small amounts of melatonin, alongside unsaturated fats and antioxidants that contribute to their nutritional value.

Nutrition and wellness consultant Sheela Krishnaswamy has highlighted the relevance of magnesium and tryptophan in supporting normal nervous system function and overall health. However, the presence of these nutrients does not mean that eating almonds will automatically resolve sleep problems.

How much should you eat?

The study used a daily serving of 60 grams of almonds. However, this should not automatically be considered the ideal serving size for everyone. Almonds are energy-dense, so individual dietary needs, calorie requirements and existing health conditions should be considered when deciding how much to eat.

For those hoping to improve their sleep, almonds can be included as part of a balanced diet alongside other healthy habits. Avoiding caffeine late in the day, keeping the bedroom comfortable, reducing screen exposure before bedtime and following a consistent sleep schedule may also help.

People experiencing persistent sleep difficulties should seek professional medical advice rather than relying solely on dietary changes.

Overall, the findings offer an encouraging indication that everyday foods may contribute to better sleep. Still, almonds should be viewed as a possible supporting measure, not a guaranteed solution for insomnia or other sleep disorders.
