The much-awaited film Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sai Pallavi and Yash, has arrived with a significant difference for international audiences. The English version of the epic is around 30 minutes shorter than its Hindi counterpart, with several scenes and songs reportedly removed to make the film more accessible to overseas viewers.
The difference came up during a recent international interaction involving the film's lead cast. The interviewer revealed that she had watched the English version and was disappointed to discover that the songs were missing. Reacting to her comment, Ranbir Kapoor jokingly suggested that she should watch the Hindi version instead.
"Well then, you should go and watch the Hindi version. They cut a good 30 minutes," the actor said with a laugh.
Sai Pallavi clarified that the changes were not limited to the songs. According to her, certain scenes from the film have also been removed in the shorter version.
Yash further explained the thinking behind the decision. He said that the film features a large number of characters, and international audiences might find it difficult to connect with or understand all the characters at this stage. Therefore, the makers collectively decided on a suitable runtime and presentation for the global audience.
He also suggested that viewers who become interested in the story could explore the Indian-language versions to experience more of the film. Those wanting to understand the story in greater detail could also read the screenplay.
When the interviewer specifically asked whether dance sequences had been removed, the cast collectively clarified that there were no dance sequences missing from the English version.
The decision to create different cuts appears to be part of the makers' strategy to introduce the Indian epic to a wider international audience. While the English version has been made more concise, the Hindi and other Indian-language versions are expected to retain the musical portions and additional scenes.
Music remains an important part of the film's Indian release. The makers have already unveiled 'Jai Jai Ram', composed by AR Rahman, featuring the voices of Arijit Singh and Shreya Ghoshal. The song has lyrics by Kumar Vishwas.
Directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra and Yash, Ramayana is being made on a reported combined budget of around Rs 4,000 crore for its two parts. The film features Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Ram, Sai Pallavi as Sita and Yash as Ravana. Sunny Deol and Ravi Dubey also play pivotal roles.
The first instalment is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on November 5, 2026, while the second part is planned for Diwali 2028.
