The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) has suspended 215 office-bearers across several states for failing to attend the INDIA bloc's November 1 rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan. The disciplinary action, ordered by the organisation's national leadership, has affected functionaries from seven states and the Uttar Pradesh Central unit.
The suspensions cover eight organisational regions, with Madhya Pradesh recording the highest number of cases. According to the available figures, 60 office-bearers have been suspended in Madhya Pradesh, followed by 49 in Gujarat, 32 in Jharkhand, 26 in West Bengal, 14 in Telangana, 13 in Himachal Pradesh, 11 in Uttar Pradesh Central and 10 in Haryana.
The suspension orders were issued on November 3 and will remain in force until further notice. The leadership reportedly considered the absence of these office-bearers a serious case of organisational indiscipline, particularly because attendance at the rally had been made compulsory for national, state and district-level functionaries.
The Youth Congress had also introduced a digital attendance monitoring system to track participation. Office-bearers were instructed to register through the organisation's mobile application, while barcode scanners were installed at the assembly point on Minto Road in Delhi. The system was intended to record attendance and monitor the participation of members travelling from different states.
The November 1 rally, organised under the INDIA bloc banner, was part of the Opposition's campaign against alleged irregularities in electoral rolls and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise. The demonstration also demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Congress leaders, including party president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi, addressed the gathering. Several prominent INDIA bloc leaders also participated in the event, which was projected as an important show of Opposition unity.
The suspensions have exposed the Congress youth organisation's concerns over internal discipline and mobilisation. Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat together account for 109 of the 215 suspended office-bearers, making them the two most affected regions.
The action is not necessarily permanent. Suspended functionaries are expected to demonstrate their organisational involvement and follow leadership instructions before their cases can be reconsidered. The leadership has indicated that those seeking reinstatement will have to return to grassroots organisational work and prove their commitment.
The move sends a clear message that the national leadership expects its office-bearers to follow organisational instructions, particularly during major political programmes and nationwide campaigns.
