The Election Commission of India has announced a Special Summary Revision (SSR) of electoral rolls in six states and Union Territories, aiming to ensure that all eligible citizens are included in the voters' list ahead of upcoming elections. The exercise will cover Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu, Mizoram, Odisha and Sikkim.
The revision process is intended to identify eligible voters who are missing from the electoral rolls and provide them with an opportunity to register. Special attention will be given to young voters and first-time electors who are preparing to exercise their voting rights for the first time.
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission on Thursday, November 5, the draft electoral rolls will be published on November 30, 2026. Citizens will then be able to check their names and submit applications for corrections or inclusion, as applicable. The final electoral rolls are scheduled to be published on January 21, 2027.
An important feature of this exercise is the provision for advance applications from citizens who will become eligible to vote during 2027. Individuals attaining the qualifying age on April 1, July 1 and October 1, 2027, will be able to submit their applications in advance rather than waiting until they reach the qualifying date.
The initiative is expected to make the voter registration process more accessible, particularly for young citizens entering the electoral system. It will also help maintain accurate and updated electoral records across the states and Union Territories covered by the exercise.
The Election Commission has directed the chief secretaries of the respective states and Union Territories to ensure that adequate manpower and resources are made available for the smooth implementation of the revision process.
The administration will need to coordinate with election officials to facilitate voter registration, verification and other necessary procedures within the stipulated timeline.
The latest announcement comes amid growing political discussions surrounding electoral roll revisions and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise in different parts of the country. The opposition has raised concerns over voter-list verification, while the Election Commission has maintained that updating electoral rolls is essential to ensure that eligible citizens can participate in the democratic process.
With the draft list expected on November 30 and final publication scheduled for January 21, 2027, voters in the six states and Union Territories will have an opportunity to verify their details and ensure their names are correctly reflected in the electoral rolls.
