US President Donald Trump has expressed strong support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), highlighting the need for alternative energy and trade routes as tensions and disruptions continue across West Asia.
Speaking during a meeting with Gulf and Arab leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, Trump said his administration supports IMEC and stressed the importance of moving Middle Eastern energy infrastructure away from routes vulnerable to Iranian pressure. His remarks come amid ongoing instability and attacks affecting commercial shipping in the region.
IMEC was announced in 2023 and is designed to connect India with the Gulf and Europe through a combination of shipping and rail infrastructure. The proposed corridor involves India, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Israel and European partners, with the aim of improving the movement of goods and strengthening economic connectivity between the three regions.
The corridor has gained renewed attention because of the strategic importance of alternative routes for energy and trade. Recent disruptions in West Asia have highlighted the vulnerability of conventional shipping routes, particularly those passing through strategically sensitive waterways.
Trump's latest comments also bring Saudi Arabia into sharper focus. Saudi participation is important to the planned route because the corridor's proposed land link runs through the kingdom before connecting with Jordan and Israel. The project's future therefore depends not only on infrastructure development but also on the political and security environment across the region.
Saudi Arabia has not yet joined the Abraham Accords with Israel, another factor that could affect the development of the corridor. At the same time, Riyadh has been strengthening its relationships with several regional powers and pursuing its own security and economic interests.
India has maintained close economic and strategic ties with the UAE, one of the key countries in the IMEC framework. The UAE is also an important partner in India's energy, trade and investment relationships.
The corridor was formally unveiled at the G20 Summit in New Delhi in September 2023. The participating countries signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at developing a multimodal connectivity network linking India, the Middle East and Europe.
Trump's endorsement comes at a time when energy security has become a major concern because of the continuing conflict and disruptions in West Asia. His administration has also been discussing measures to strengthen alternative energy infrastructure with regional partners.
Whether IMEC can reach its full potential will depend on infrastructure investment, regional security, cooperation among participating countries and the evolving diplomatic relationships between Saudi Arabia, Israel, Iran and other regional powers.
