US President Donald Trump has voiced support for the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), saying the project could help reduce the dependence of Middle Eastern energy supplies on routes affected by tensions with Iran.
Trump made the remarks during a multilateral meeting with leaders of the Gulf Cooperation Council on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session in New York. He argued that recent attacks and threats involving commercial shipping had highlighted the need to develop alternative routes for moving oil and other energy resources.
The comments come amid heightened tensions surrounding the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically important waterway between Iran and Oman. The strait is a major route for global energy shipments, and concerns over possible disruption have increased during the ongoing conflict involving Iran and the West.
The India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor was officially unveiled during the G20 Summit in New Delhi on September 9, 2023. The proposed connectivity network is designed to link India with the Middle East and Europe through a combination of shipping routes, rail networks and other infrastructure. Its broader objectives include improving trade connectivity, reducing transportation costs and supporting economic cooperation between participating regions.
Trump also used his UN address to issue strong warnings to Iran while indicating that diplomatic negotiations could still produce an agreement. He said he faced a major decision over whether a deal could allow Iran to rebuild or whether the United States would take further military action.
Iran's Armed Forces rejected Trump's remarks as "propaganda" and said its forces were prepared to respond to any attack.
The Strait of Hormuz remains a major concern for Gulf countries because a significant share of global oil and gas shipments normally passes through the waterway. Several Gulf states are also home to major US military installations, some of which have reportedly come under attack during the conflict.
Trump also met leaders from several Middle Eastern countries who are seeking the restoration of stable commercial shipping routes. The discussions focused on energy security, regional stability and alternative transportation routes that could reduce the impact of disruptions around Hormuz.
Meanwhile, oil markets received some relief after Saudi Arabia reportedly restarted operations on its East-West Pipeline. The pipeline provides an alternative route for transporting Saudi crude and allows exports to reach the Red Sea port of Yanbu without passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The developments have placed renewed attention on IMEC and its potential role in strengthening connectivity between India, the Middle East and Europe as regional tensions continue to affect global trade and energy routes.
