Chinese drama The Early Spring has concluded its 24-episode run with the long-awaited reunion of Luan Nian, known as Luke, and Shang Zhitao, or Flora. Starring Jing Boran and Sun Qian, the series built its story around a complicated six-year relationship shaped by secrecy, workplace pressure, emotional baggage and missed opportunities.
The drama, which streamed on Netflix and Youku, followed Luke and Flora as they struggled to turn their intense connection into a healthy relationship.
Luke was Flora's boss at Lingmei Advertising in Beijing, creating a difficult power imbalance between them. Although the two shared a strong emotional bond, Luke's controlling behaviour often made Flora feel restricted. Flora, meanwhile, struggled with insecurities and repeatedly questioned whether she was good enough for him.
Their relationship eventually reached a breaking point after Flora experienced a series of painful events. A junior colleague took credit for her work because of family connections, while the death of her best friend left her devastated. These experiences forced Flora to reconsider her priorities and realise that she could not continue sacrificing her identity for her relationship.
She eventually broke up with Luke, left Lingmei and returned to her hometown of Harbin. Instead of waiting for Luke to rescue her, Flora built a new life independently. She bought a house, established her own event management company and began creating a future on her own terms.
Luke's journey was equally important. If he wanted Flora back, he understood that he could not simply return to their old relationship. He had to change the behaviour that had made her feel trapped.
When Flora's business later faced financial difficulties, she chose to mortgage her apartment rather than seek money from Luke. This showed how strongly she valued her independence. When Luke came to Harbin, he supported her by using his professional connections to create opportunities without taking control of her company.
Their relationship also changed on a personal level. When Flora stopped him during a moment when they almost kissed, Luke respected her decision rather than pressuring her. It became clear that he had finally learned to respect her choices.
Their eventual reunion was no longer based on secrecy. When Flora's father discovered them together, Luke openly acknowledged their relationship and said they had separated because of a misunderstanding but still loved each other. He made it clear that he wanted to marry Flora and build a future with her.
The finale's biggest romantic moment came with Luke's “Museum of Time” proposal. Instead of an extravagant display of wealth, he created an exhibition filled with photographs, belongings and memories from Flora's years in Beijing.
The exhibition also revealed how long Luke had cared about her. He recalled that when he first drove Flora home years earlier, he had not actually been heading in that direction. He had simply wanted an excuse to stay close to her.
The proposal ended with a playful touch when their dog, also named Luke, appeared with balloons and a message asking Flora to say yes. Surrounded by friends, Luke got down on one knee, and Flora accepted.
The most satisfying part of the ending was that Flora did not give up the independent life she had built. She continued running her own company and eventually returned to Lingmei on her own terms, no longer occupying the position of Luke's subordinate.
Ultimately, The Early Spring suggests that love alone cannot solve an unhealthy relationship. Luke and Flora needed time apart to grow, become more honest and understand themselves. Only after finding their independence were they able to return to each other as equals.
