News Desk: Stroke cases in India have doubled over the past decade, raising concerns about growing health risks linked to modern lifestyles. However, medical experts say that many strokes can be prevented through healthier daily habits, regular health check-ups and proper management of existing medical conditions.
Dr Darshan Doshi, consultant neurologist at PD Hinduja Hospital and Medical Research Centre in Mumbai, says stroke accounts for nearly 30 per cent of overall morbidity in India. He believes that simple lifestyle changes and timely medical intervention can significantly reduce the risk.
Here are eight habits recommended by the neurologist to protect brain health.
1. Keep blood pressure under control
High blood pressure is one of the leading risk factors for stroke. Since hypertension often develops without noticeable symptoms, regular monitoring is essential. Reducing salt consumption and visiting a doctor regularly can help keep blood pressure within a healthy range.
2. Manage diabetes and cholesterol
Uncontrolled blood sugar can damage blood vessels, while high cholesterol can lead to fatty deposits inside arteries. Both conditions increase the risk of stroke. Proper medication, a balanced diet and regular exercise are important for managing them.
3. Pay attention to irregular heartbeats
Atrial fibrillation, a condition that causes an irregular heartbeat, can lead to blood clot formation in the heart. These clots may travel to the brain and trigger a stroke. Doctors may recommend blood-thinning medication for people at risk.
4. Make exercise part of your daily routine
Physical activity helps maintain healthy blood circulation and reduces several stroke-related risk factors. Dr Doshi recommends at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week. Those with busy schedules can divide it into two 15-minute sessions.
5. Limit alcohol consumption
Excessive alcohol intake can increase blood pressure and contribute to stroke risk. Avoiding alcohol or limiting consumption is an important step towards better cardiovascular health.
6. Quit smoking and tobacco
Smoking and tobacco consumption damage blood vessels and increase the chances of blood clot formation. Giving up tobacco can significantly reduce the risk of stroke.
7. Follow a balanced diet
A healthy diet can protect blood vessels and improve overall health. Experts recommend reducing salt and high-cholesterol foods while including more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy products.
8. Maintain a healthy body weight
Excess body weight increases the risk of diabetes, high cholesterol and hypertension, collectively raising the chances of stroke. Even modest weight loss can improve metabolic health and help reduce these risks.
Doctors stress that preventing stroke does not require dramatic lifestyle changes overnight. Consistent healthy habits, regular medical check-ups and following prescribed treatments can make a significant difference.
