Filmmakers Ram Gopal Varma and Mohit Suri are joining hands for a new gangster drama set against the backdrop of the split between underworld figures Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan.
Varma, known for films such as Satya and Company, will write and co-produce the project, while Suri will direct it. The filmmaker announced the collaboration on social media, teasing a combination of gangster drama, romance, emotion, music and action.
Sharing a photograph with Suri, Varma described their upcoming project as a “love dish” filled with “gangster curry” and promised that more details would be revealed soon.
Suri later reshared Varma's announcement and described the film as a project coming “straight from the heart,” while referring to Varma as the “OG gangster” because of his long association with Mumbai's underworld stories.
The filmmaker subsequently revealed more about the story. According to Varma, the film will be set during the period surrounding the split between Dawood Ibrahim and Chhota Rajan. The story will also explore the role of Indian intelligence agencies and events that followed the 1993 serial blasts.
Varma said the narrative would revolve around a character named Sautya and examine how the underworld split and subsequent developments unfolded. The filmmaker's description suggests that the film will combine fictional storytelling with a backdrop inspired by a significant period in Mumbai's criminal history.
While the subject is rooted in the gangster world, Varma said Suri would bring a different style to the material. He praised the director's ability to create emotionally engaging characters and combine them with strong music and realistic action.
Varma has also set ambitious expectations for the film, describing it as being “much larger in scale than Dhurandhar” while saying it would be more emotionally rooted than Satya.
The collaboration is also significant for Suri on a personal level. Varma's films were among the works that influenced him when he was growing up and developing an interest in filmmaking. The new project therefore represents an opportunity for Suri to work alongside a filmmaker who played a role in shaping his cinematic ambitions.
The announcement comes after the success of Suri's romantic drama Saiyaara, starring Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda. The film became a major commercial success and emerged as one of the notable Hindi romantic films of recent times.
Suri is also expected to reunite with Panday and Padda for another romantic drama backed by Yash Raj Films, reportedly scheduled for release in 2027.
Varma, meanwhile, has several other projects in development. His upcoming slate includes Police Company, a crime drama featuring Harshvardhan Rane in a character inspired by Mumbai Police encounter specialist Daya Nayak.
He has also announced Police Station Mein Bhoot, a horror-comedy that marks another collaboration with Manoj Bajpayee, following their work together on Satya, Kaun and Shool. Another project, Syndicate, is reportedly built around the idea of India's entire law-and-order system collapsing within a single day.
With the new Suri-Varma collaboration combining Mumbai's underworld backdrop with romance, emotion and action, the project is already generating curiosity among Bollywood audiences. However, details such as the cast, title and release date are yet to be officially announced.
