New Delhi: Tension prevailed in the national capital on Sunday after Delhi Police detained more than 100 students during a protest against the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The students were marching towards Connaught Place from Minto Road when police personnel intercepted them and stopped their procession.
The protest was organised by student organisation DISHA, which demanded the cancellation of the ongoing SIR exercise. The students raised objections to the voter list revision process and sought its withdrawal.
According to reports, the protesters were moving from Minto Road towards Connaught Place when a police team blocked their route. Following the intervention, more than 100 students were detained and taken away by the police.
The demonstration comes amid growing political tensions over the Election Commission's voter list revision exercise. The SIR process has become a major point of confrontation between the ruling BJP and Opposition parties, with several Opposition leaders questioning its implementation and raising concerns over the deletion of voters' names.
The protest also coincided with the INDIA bloc's mega rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan, where several prominent Opposition leaders gathered to raise concerns over electoral transparency and alleged vote theft.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee and Samajwadi Party president Akhilesh Yadav were among the prominent leaders who participated in the rally.
The detention of students added another dimension to the political developments in Delhi on Sunday. However, there was no immediate official clarification regarding the number of students detained or whether any formal cases had been registered against the protesters.
The incident has brought renewed attention to student protests and the growing controversy surrounding the SIR exercise.
