New Delhi: A political war of words erupted between the BJP and the Opposition following the INDIA bloc's mega rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan on Sunday. The BJP dismissed the gathering as a 'flop show', claiming that a significant portion of the ground remained empty and questioning the public response to the Opposition's mobilisation campaign.
Addressing reporters, BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra claimed that around 40 per cent of the venue was vacant, despite the Congress reportedly projecting an attendance of nearly 10 lakh people. He also accused the Opposition of using camera angles and selective visuals to exaggerate the size of the gathering.
"Trick photography does not make someone Prime Minister," Patra said, taking a swipe at Rahul Gandhi and the Congress leadership.
Patra also challenged Rahul Gandhi over his allegations that the 2024 Lok Sabha elections were illegal. He questioned why the Congress leader had not approached the appropriate legal forum immediately after the elections if he believed the electoral process was compromised.
"Show me the petition you have filed that the 2024 election is illegal," the BJP spokesperson said.
Taking another dig at the Congress leader, Patra referred to Rahul Gandhi's remarks comparing the political gathering with Lord Shiva's wedding procession and warned that voters would deliver their response in the next election.
Earlier, Rahul Gandhi had launched a sharp attack on the Election Commission and Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alleging large-scale vote theft during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. He accused the poll machinery of undermining democracy and claimed that the alleged manipulation had helped Narendra Modi return to power.
The 'Chalo Delhi' rally was organised to protest against the Election Commission's functioning and the ongoing voter list revision exercise. Several prominent INDIA bloc leaders, including Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, participated in the gathering.
The contrasting claims from the BJP and Opposition have once again intensified the political confrontation over electoral transparency and the credibility of India's democratic institutions.
