A collection of heartfelt letters is bringing back memories of one of Indian cinema's most loved actors, Irrfan Khan. From his wife Sutapa Sikdar to filmmaker Shoojit Sircar and several fellow artists, the new book offers an intimate glimpse into the life, personality and artistic brilliance of the late actor, who continues to remain deeply missed by audiences and the film fraternity.
Titled Irrfan, Tumhare Liye Chithhiyan Aayi Hain, the book has been curated by Amir Hamza and brings together letters written by actors, filmmakers and artists who knew Irrfan personally or shared professional journeys with him. Rather than simply celebrating his achievements on screen, the collection attempts to capture the person behind the unforgettable performances. ThePrint
One of the most emotional contributions comes from Sutapa Sikdar, Irrfan's wife. In her letter, titled Kya Ab Bhi Behti Dhaaraon Ka Paani Peete Ho?, she recalls visiting a jungle that she had once explored with Irrfan. During her visit after his death, she discovered that a bamboo tree flowers only once before dying. The sight reminded her of her husband, whose life, she suggested, had blossomed beautifully and left lasting footprints for others to follow.
Filmmaker Shoojit Sircar has also penned a letter titled Aap Hamesha Utkrishtata Ke Maandand Bane Rahoge, meaning that Irrfan will always remain a benchmark of excellence. His contribution reflects the deep respect the actor commanded among filmmakers and creative professionals.
The book also features contributions from Tilottama Shome, Brijendra Kala, Chandan Roy and Yashpal Sharma. Each letter approaches Irrfan from a different emotional and artistic perspective.
Actor and storyteller Danish Husain shares a particularly memorable recollection in his letter, Us Raat Irrfan Ki Aankhein Ruaansi Ho Gayi. He remembers watching Irrfan in a television serial and being astonished by the way the actor communicated a character's inner world through facial expressions, particularly in close-up shots. That early impression eventually shaped his understanding of acting.
What makes the collection special is its personal approach. Irrfan was never an actor who relied only on dialogue or dramatic gestures. His silences, expressions and understated performances often communicated more than words could.
Even years after his death in April 2020, Irrfan's artistic legacy continues to inspire generations. This book is not merely a tribute to a celebrated performer; it is an attempt to keep alive the memories of a remarkable human being whose presence continues to be felt through his work.
