Rajasthan Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma on Saturday paid tribute to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel on his 151st birth anniversary, remembering his historic contribution to India's unity, integrity and nation-building. The occasion was observed across the country as Rashtriya Ekta Diwas, or National Unity Day.
Chief Minister Sharma offered floral tributes to a portrait of Sardar Patel and highlighted his remarkable role in India's freedom struggle and the integration of princely states after Independence. He said Patel's determination, political vision and commitment to national unity played a crucial role in shaping modern India.
The Chief Minister also participated in the 'Run for Unity' programme organised in Jaipur to mark the occasion. The event aimed to spread the message of national unity, integrity and brotherhood, while encouraging people, particularly the youth, to follow Patel's ideals.
Addressing the gathering, Sharma described Sardar Patel as the great architect of India's unity and integrity. He said the Run for Unity was a reminder of the country's collective responsibility to protect its unity and national identity.
Union Minister Pralhad Joshi was also present at the Jaipur programme. He recalled Patel's historic contribution in bringing together more than 500 princely states after Independence, laying the foundation for a united India. He also highlighted Patel's role in the creation of Greater Rajasthan on March 30, 1949.
Several other public representatives, officials, sports personalities and young people participated in the programme. The gathering also took a pledge to uphold national unity and follow the principles of integrity and patriotism.
In his tribute, Sharma said Patel's life continues to inspire generations to place the interests of the nation above everything else. He emphasised that his ideals of social harmony, national sovereignty and collective responsibility remain relevant in contemporary India.
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, popularly known as the 'Iron Man of India', was born on October 31, 1875. He served as India's first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister. His contribution to integrating more than 560 princely states into the Indian Union remains one of the most significant achievements in the country's post-Independence history.
His birth anniversary has been observed as National Unity Day since 2014. The day is marked by Run for Unity events, public programmes and unity pledges across the country.
The Statue of Unity in Gujarat, the world's tallest statue, stands as a lasting tribute to Patel's vision and contribution to building a united India.
