A Mumbai-based Air India pilot in his 40s died in Delhi after he was found unconscious at a hotel during a layover, the airline said on Saturday.
The pilot was staying at The Grand Hotel in Vasant Kunj when he was found unconscious on Friday evening. He was immediately taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
The pilot had been scheduled to operate a flight early on Saturday morning. Details about the exact cause of his death have not yet been disclosed.
According to reports, the crew member had previously worked with Air India Express before moving to Air India a couple of months ago. He was based in Mumbai and was on a scheduled layover in Delhi at the time of the incident.
The sudden death has come as a shock to his colleagues and the airline. Air India expressed deep sadness over the loss and said it was in close contact with the pilot’s family.
In a statement, the airline said it was providing all possible support to the family during this difficult time.
The incident occurred while the pilot was away from his home base as part of his flying duties. Crew members routinely stay at hotels during layovers between flights, depending on their schedules and operational requirements.
The circumstances surrounding the pilot’s death are expected to be examined by the authorities. Further details, including the medical cause of death, are awaited.
The incident has also drawn attention to the demanding schedules and responsibilities associated with commercial aviation, where pilots are required to meet strict medical and operational standards before operating flights.
However, there is currently no indication that the pilot’s death was connected to his flying duties or any operational issue.
Air India is continuing to coordinate with the family and relevant authorities as the matter is investigated. Further information is expected once the official medical and investigative procedures are completed.
