News Desk: US President Donald Trump has sparked controversy after making personal remarks about a journalist who questioned him about his health and his decision to cancel campaign appearances in two states ahead of the November 3 midterm elections.
The incident took place during an interaction with reporters on Thursday. Trump was asked whether his decision to cancel planned campaign rallies in Kansas and Iowa was linked to concerns about his health. The question appeared to irritate the US President, who immediately reacted angrily.
"Oh, you're sick to ask that question. You are sick," Trump told the journalist. When the reporter clarified that he was simply asking about the President's health and well-being, Trump continued his criticism, turning his attention to the journalist's physical appearance.
"Look at this guy. He's way out of shape," Trump said, before adding, "You are disgusting. Put yourself in shape. You look like hell."
Trump also dismissed suggestions that he was unwell, insisting that he felt perfectly fine. "You've been following me for two weeks. I feel perfect," he said. He further explained that he was not travelling to Kansas because he simply did not feel like going there.
The exchange comes as Trump has been actively campaigning for Republican candidates ahead of the crucial midterm elections. His decision to cancel appearances in Kansas and Iowa raised questions about his campaign schedule.
Following the cancellations, his campaign funding organisation, MAGA Inc., announced plans to organise a series of tele-rallies featuring Trump across at least 19 states, including Kansas and Iowa, before Election Day.
Trump's Comments On Physical Appearance
This is not the first time Trump has made remarks about people's physical appearance during his political engagements. During the ongoing midterm campaign, he has repeatedly commented on the looks and physical features of political figures and supporters.
At a rally in Michigan, Trump appeared alongside pop star Nicki Minaj, who has publicly described herself as his number one fan. While praising the singer, he made a controversial remark about her appearance and later asked her to stand up before adding that he hoped she had not been offended.
In another instance in Kentucky, Trump praised Republican Senate candidate Jon Husted by making remarks about his physical features, including his shoulders, hands, feet and jawline.
However, Trump has also directed personal comments towards members of his own party. At a Republican midterm convention, he publicly criticised Texas Senate candidate Ken Paxton's appearance, saying that he did not particularly like the way he looked.
The United States midterm elections are scheduled for November 3, 2026. Around 470 seats across the House of Representatives and the Senate are at stake. The results will determine the balance of power in Congress and influence Trump's ability to advance his legislative agenda during the remaining two years of his presidency.
