Washington: US President Donald Trump surprised Republicans with an unusual speech on the eve of the 2026 midterm elections, focusing largely on the renovation of the iconic Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool rather than the economic concerns dominating the campaign.
Speaking at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington on Monday, November 2, Trump delivered a nearly 53-minute address highlighting construction and beautification projects undertaken during his second term. The speech was expected to serve as his final major campaign pitch to voters ahead of Election Day.
However, instead of concentrating on inflation, rising living costs and the economy, Trump spent considerable time discussing rusty pipes, fountains, algae, grass and repairs to the historic reflecting pool.
Holding up photographs of the renovation work, Trump proudly described how the old infrastructure had been replaced. He also spoke about cleaning graffiti, improving monuments and restoring parts of the National Mall.
"We're giving serious thought to changing the name to the Trump Reflecting Pool," he joked during the speech.
His remarks reportedly left several Republican advisers and campaign strategists frustrated. Some had expected the president to use the high-profile appearance to highlight Republican achievements and address voters' economic concerns, particularly as the party faces a challenging midterm election.
Republican lawmakers have increasingly expressed concerns about the impact of tariffs and rising prices on voters. Nebraska Republican Representative Don Bacon had hoped Trump would focus more on issues such as tax cuts and border security.
Trump briefly attacked Democratic candidates, described them as radicals and urged voters to support Republicans. However, election-related comments occupied only a small portion of his address.
The president also acknowledged the historical difficulties faced by the ruling party during midterm elections, saying that sitting presidents often lose political ground during such contests.
The 2026 midterm elections will determine all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 Senate seats. The outcome will play a crucial role in determining how much legislative power Trump retains during the final two years of his presidency.
