Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has left for the United Kingdom on a week-long visit aimed at attracting foreign investment, strengthening ties with British companies and exploring opportunities in the global motorsports sector.
This is Vijay’s first overseas visit since taking office in May. He travelled to London via Dubai and is expected to return to Chennai on September 17. During the visit, he is also scheduled to interact with members of the Tamil diaspora in the UK.
Vijay is expected to present Tamil Nadu as a major investment destination in Asia and seek foreign direct investment across several key sectors. His delegation includes Public Works and Sports Development Minister Aadhav Arjuna, Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu member secretary Meghnatha Reddy and Guidance Tamil Nadu MD and CEO Deepak Jacob.
The visit comes shortly after the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) came into effect on July 15. Tamil Nadu was among the first states to use the new trade framework, sending its first export consignment to the UK on the day the agreement became operational.
Officials said the agreement could create opportunities for joint ventures, technology transfers and increased exports in sectors such as automobile components, engineering goods, electronics, textiles, leather and footwear.
The state government is also looking to build on the momentum generated by the Vettri Tamil Nadu Investors' Conclave 2026. The administration has signed MoUs worth more than ₹1 lakh crore within its first 100 days, according to the government.
During the UK visit, the delegation is expected to engage with existing British companies and seek new investment commitments, particularly in areas such as Global Capability Centres, electric vehicle manufacturing and advanced engineering.
A major part of Vijay’s itinerary will be a visit to the iconic Silverstone Motor Racing Circuit in Northamptonshire. The visit follows his recent announcement in the Tamil Nadu Assembly about plans to establish a world-class Motor Sports City in the state.
Vijay and officials from the sports department are expected to study Silverstone’s circuit design, commercial operations and safety standards. The government hopes such an exercise could help identify potential partnerships in sports tourism and specialised automotive research.
The UK visit is therefore expected to combine investment diplomacy with Tamil Nadu’s ambitions in trade, technology, manufacturing and motorsports.
