US Warns Iranian Officials Against Luxury Shopping During UNGA Visit

The United States has warned Iranian officials against using their upcoming visit to New York for the United Nations General Assembly to purchase luxury goods, even as Washington has approved visas for Iran’s core delegation to attend the UN meetings.

US State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said Iranian officials would face restrictions on buying luxury goods during their stay in the United States. He warned that Washington would not allow the UN General Assembly visit to be used for what he described as luxury shopping by Iranian officials.

The warning comes as tensions between the United States and Iran remain high. Despite the strained relationship, Washington has agreed to allow a core Iranian delegation to attend the 81st UN General Assembly High-Level Week in New York. The decision is linked to the United States’ obligations as the host country of the UN headquarters.

According to the US State Department, the Iranian delegation will be smaller than last year and will remain subject to travel restrictions while in the New York area. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi are expected to be among the senior officials attending the gathering.

Pigott said the US would continue to restrict Iranian UN Mission officials, visiting officials and their dependents from purchasing certain luxury goods and memberships. He also urged retailers in the New York area to ensure they do not violate the restrictions.

The issue has become part of a wider US effort to limit the activities of senior Iranian officials while still allowing them to participate in UN proceedings. Similar restrictions have previously been imposed on Iranian diplomats visiting New York for UN-related meetings.

The UN General Assembly High-Level Week is scheduled to bring leaders and senior officials from around the world to New York. The gathering is expected to focus on major international issues, including conflicts in West Asia, the Russia-Ukraine war, climate change and the growing impact of artificial intelligence.

The US decision to issue visas to the Iranian delegation comes against the backdrop of continuing tensions between Washington and Tehran. The two countries remain at odds over several issues, including Iran’s nuclear programme, regional security and the strategic Strait of Hormuz.

US President Donald Trump has said that Iran wants to reach an agreement with Washington but has indicated that Tehran is not yet ready to accept the terms sought by the US. Trump is also expected to meet leaders and foreign ministers from Gulf Cooperation Council countries on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The decision to allow the Iranian delegation into New York highlights the complicated nature of US-Iran relations. While Washington continues to impose restrictions on Iranian officials, it is also allowing senior representatives to participate in the annual UN gathering under the obligations associated with hosting the United Nations.

For now, Iranian officials attending the General Assembly will have to operate under the specific travel and purchasing restrictions imposed by the United States. The measures are expected to remain in place during their stay in New York.
