Veteran Bollywood actor Mandakini has spoken about the controversial photograph of her with underworld figure Dawood Ibrahim, which had sparked widespread speculation years ago. In an interview with ANI, the actor clarified that she had not been invited to Dubai by Dawood and explained the circumstances surrounding the photograph.
Mandakini said she had travelled to Dubai for a show and later attended a cricket match, where the photograph was taken. According to her, she did not realise the significance of the moment at the time.
The actor said that artists often meet many people during public appearances and events and that she had no control over how photographs or encounters are subsequently interpreted.
She also said that the controversy surrounding the photograph had a major impact on her career. Mandakini recalled that she later realised the importance of having a professional team to handle such situations and said she had denied the rumours at the time.
The photograph had attracted considerable attention because of Dawood Ibrahim's reputation and his alleged links to organised crime. Over the years, the image became the subject of media reports and speculation about Mandakini's association with him.
Speaking about the episode, Mandakini maintained that she had gone to Dubai for professional reasons and not because she had been invited by Dawood.
The actor also reflected on her film career and her rise to fame in the 1980s. Mandakini made her Bollywood debut with Raj Kapoor's Ram Teri Ganga Maili, in which she played the lead role of Ganga. The film became a major success and established her as one of the prominent actresses of the decade.
Mandakini was only 16 when she appeared in the film. Her performance, along with the film's storyline and Raj Kapoor's direction, brought her widespread recognition.
In the interview, she also spoke warmly about working with Raj Kapoor. She described his approach as gentle and affectionate and said she felt comfortable while working under his direction.
After the success of Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Mandakini continued to work in Hindi cinema and appeared in more than 75 films. She shared the screen with several prominent actors, including Anil Kapoor, Mithun Chakraborty and Govinda.
However, the controversy surrounding the Dubai photograph became one of the most discussed episodes associated with her public life. Mandakini said the speculation caused considerable damage and that she repeatedly denied the reports.
Years later, her latest comments provide her account of how the photograph came about. She has maintained that her trip to Dubai was connected to a show and that she later attended a cricket match, where she happened to be photographed with Dawood Ibrahim.
