Dozens of pornographic videos were allegedly found on a mobile phone seized from former JD(S) MP Prajwal Revanna during a surprise inspection at Bengaluru’s Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, according to the latest forensic examination.
The phone was among several items recovered during a four-to-five-hour search of the barrack on August 11. Police also seized a SIM card, charger and notebook. A pen drive recovered during the inspection reportedly contained movies and web series.
Revanna, who is currently in jail in connection with a rape case, was allegedly found using an Android smartphone inside the prison. A video that later surfaced showed him in casual clothes speaking to someone over the phone.
According to police cited by PTI, the forensic examination found several dozen explicit videos on the seized phone. During questioning, however, Revanna denied owning the device and claimed that it was used and circulated among inmates. He also denied downloading the videos.
Investigators also examined a notebook recovered from the cell. It reportedly contained phone numbers belonging to Revanna’s family members and acquaintances. Police said call records indicated unauthorised communication with family members through intermediaries, along with direct communication with a female friend. Revanna reportedly acknowledged the latter during questioning.
The investigation has also focused on how the prohibited mobile phone and SIM card entered the high-security prison.
According to police, the phone and SIM were allegedly brought into the prison separately. Investigators said the accused claimed the phone was smuggled in with the help of a prison warder, while the SIM card was allegedly brought through an undertrial prisoner.
Five people have been arrested in connection with the alleged smuggling of the devices, according to a police statement issued on Friday. The investigation is continuing, and authorities are expected to issue notices to people whose numbers appeared in the phone’s call records.
Revanna and another undertrial prisoner, Prathap Rai, were produced before a court on September 8 and sent to three days of police custody for questioning. They were subsequently returned to prison on September 10 following a court order.
The latest findings have added another layer to the investigation into the alleged misuse of mobile phones inside the prison. Police are now examining the communications, the source of the devices and the people who may have facilitated their entry into the jail.
