Banks closed for up to 4 days from today

Banks in several parts of India will remain closed for three to four consecutive days from September 12, 2026, as the second Saturday and Sunday coincide with festivals including Ganesh Chaturthi and Nuakhai.

September 12 is the second Saturday of the month, when banks across India remain closed. This will be followed by the regular Sunday holiday on September 13.

On September 14, banks in several states will remain shut for Ganesh Chaturthi. In some regions, another holiday on September 15 will extend the closure.

Goa and Odisha will see four consecutive bank holidays from September 12 to September 15. Banks in these states will remain closed on September 12 and 13 for the weekend, followed by festival holidays on September 14 and 15.

Meanwhile, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh will have three consecutive bank holidays from September 12 to September 14.

Customers should note that bank holidays can vary from state to state under the Reserve Bank of India’s holiday calendar. Even when physical branches are closed, digital banking services such as mobile banking, internet banking, UPI and ATMs generally remain available, although specific services may occasionally be affected.

The extended bank closures come shortly after a nationwide banking strike on September 11. Bank employees and officers observed a one-day strike called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU).

The unions are demanding the introduction of a five-day banking week, along with raising other issues related to the Performance Linked Incentive scheme and pensions.

UFBU represents seven major banking unions. All India Bank Employees' Association (AIBEA) General Secretary CH Venkatachalam said the strike saw participation from nearly eight lakh employees, officers and managers across the country.

He said the five-day banking week was the main demand, pointing out that only the second and fourth Saturdays are currently holidays. According to him, an agreement reached in March 2024 had proposed making all Saturdays holidays by extending working hours from Monday to Friday, but government approval has remained pending.

With the weekend and festival holidays following the strike, customers are advised to plan branch-related banking work accordingly.
