Ayushmann Khurrana has opened up about playing a Pakistani spy in the upcoming film Udta Teer, saying he had no hesitation about taking on the role because it was part of the script.
The trailer of the spy comedy was unveiled in Mumbai on Wednesday. Directed by debutant Akash A Kaushik, the film stars Ayushmann alongside Sara Ali Khan and follows an unusual story involving an undercover Pakistani agent who loses his memory while on a mission in India.
In the film, Ayushmann plays Bilal Ahmad, a Pakistani spy who enters India but suffers memory loss following an accident. He then mistakenly believes that he is an Indian intelligence agent, setting up the central conflict of the comedy.
Speaking at the trailer launch, Ayushmann said that as an actor, he is willing to take on different characters depending on what the story demands. He described Udta Teer as a combination of spy elements, comedy and patriotism.
The actor said the role was challenging because his character had to remain serious while everything around him descended into chaos.
According to Ayushmann, maintaining a straight face was one of the most difficult parts of the performance. While the situations around his character are designed to be funny, Bilal remains unaware of the comedy because of his memory loss.
Ayushmann said there were moments when he felt like laughing during the shoot but had to maintain the character’s serious expression. He described the experience as playing a normal person while unusual and chaotic events unfolded around him.
The actor also credited director Akash A Kaushik for creating the unusual concept. He described the film as the director’s “brain child” and praised the script for combining different genres.
Sara Ali Khan, who plays the female lead opposite Ayushmann, also spoke about what attracted her to the project. She said the story immediately stood out to her because of its unusual premise and the world created by the filmmakers.
Sara added that her character is very different from her real-life personality, which made the role particularly interesting for her. She said she was excited to explore a character that allowed her to step outside her familiar space.
Udta Teer features a large ensemble cast alongside the two leads. Rahul Bose, Ram Kapoor, Suhail Nayyar, Gulshan Grover, Raghubir Yadav and Supriya Pilgaonkar are among the actors appearing in the film.
The movie also features the late actor Mukul Dev in what is described as his final posthumous performance.
Udta Teer has been produced by Karan Johar, Adar Poonawalla, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain. The film is scheduled to release in cinemas on October 9.
