Cyclone Murasu has intensified over the Bay of Bengal, putting Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states on high alert. With the storm moving towards the southern Andhra Pradesh coast, authorities have stepped up emergency preparations, while heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected across several districts over the next few days.
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Cyclone Murasu is expected to cross the south Andhra Pradesh coast between Nellore and Narsapur during the early hours of November 3. The storm could bring sustained wind speeds of 100–110 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 120 kmph.
The approaching cyclone has also triggered precautionary measures in Tamil Nadu. Schools and colleges in Chennai and Tiruvallur have been ordered to remain closed on Monday, November 2, following forecasts of heavy to very heavy rainfall. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued an orange alert for both districts.
Several other districts, including Chengalpattu, Kancheepuram, Ranipet, Vellore and the Nilgiris, are also expected to receive heavy rainfall. Authorities have instructed district collectors to remain on high alert and ensure that disaster management teams are prepared to respond to emergencies.
Andhra Pradesh prepares for landfall
Andhra Pradesh is facing the most immediate threat as the cyclone approaches its coastline. Coastal districts are preparing for strong winds, intense rainfall and possible flooding. Disaster response teams have been deployed, while evacuation measures are being undertaken in vulnerable and low-lying areas.
Palnadu district has also announced a holiday for government and private schools, colleges and Anganwadi centres as a precautionary measure.
Heavy rainfall is expected across coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema on November 3 and 4. Authorities have been advised to remain prepared for waterlogging, damage to infrastructure, fallen trees and disruptions to transport services.
Odisha and Telangana remain on alert
Neighbouring Odisha has also intensified its preparedness measures, particularly in southern districts that are still dealing with the impact of Cyclone Arnab. Residents in vulnerable areas are being moved to safer locations.
Parts of Telangana are also likely to experience heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, with weather alerts issued for several districts.
The latest developments come less than a week after Cyclone Arnab affected parts of eastern India. With another powerful weather system approaching, authorities are urging residents to follow official advisories, avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from coastal areas.
The next 48 hours will be crucial as Cyclone Murasu moves towards the Andhra Pradesh coast.
