Nine people were killed after a private Learjet 60 crashed in South Florida on Sunday, November 1, with newly emerged cockpit audio revealing the terrifying final moments before the aircraft plunged into the ground. The recording captures the pilot repeatedly declaring an emergency as the jet rapidly lost altitude, followed by desperate warnings that the aircraft was about to crash.
The aircraft was travelling from Austin, Texas, to North Eleuthera in the Bahamas when the tragedy occurred in Palm Beach County, Florida. All nine people aboard, including the crew and passengers, died in the crash.
The final air traffic control (ATC) recording reveals that the flight initially encountered moderate turbulence, icing conditions and precipitation. The pilot reportedly informed air traffic controllers that the crew was managing ice accumulation and looking for smoother flying conditions.
However, the situation deteriorated rapidly. The pilot requested permission to climb to a higher altitude as weather conditions worsened. Shortly afterwards, the aircraft suddenly began losing altitude at an alarming rate.
"Mayday, Mayday!" the pilot urgently announced, reporting that the aircraft was descending at around 10,000 feet per minute. The emergency call was followed by another alarming update, with the descent rate reportedly increasing to 20,000 feet per minute.
The air traffic controller tried to reassure the crew, asking what assistance they needed and telling them, “I'm here with you. Talk to me.”
But the aircraft continued its uncontrolled descent. The pilot warned, "We're going to crash into the ground." The descent rate reportedly reached 22,000 feet per minute, while the aircraft began banking sharply.
In the final seconds, another distressed voice could be heard saying, "Look outside... we're out of time!" The radio transmission then ended. Flight-tracking data later indicated that the aircraft's vertical descent rate had briefly exceeded 32,000 feet per minute. Reuters +2
The crash took place near Greenacres in Palm Beach County, close to a mobile home community. The jet struck the ground beside a road and exploded, leaving a large crater and scattering debris across the area. Videos from the scene showed flames and thick black smoke rising into the sky.
Emergency services rushed to the location following the incident. Around 600 residents from the nearby mobile home community were evacuated as a precaution and relocated to temporary shelters. No immediate casualties were reported among people on the ground.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis described the incident as a major tragedy, while US Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy confirmed the deaths of all nine people aboard.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have launched an investigation to establish the exact cause of the disaster. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft, flight data and weather conditions, including the reported icing and turbulence.
The identities of the victims had not been officially released at the time of the latest reports. The cause of the crash also remains undetermined.
The shocking cockpit recording has raised fresh questions about what happened during the aircraft's final moments, as investigators work to piece together the sequence of events that led to the fatal crash.
