Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav turned the INDIA bloc's rally at Delhi's Ramlila Maidan into a political launchpad for the upcoming Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections, scheduled for 2027. Addressing opposition leaders and supporters on Sunday, November 1, Yadav declared that the next major political battle would begin in Uttar Pradesh and warned the BJP of a decisive electoral challenge.
The rally, organised around allegations of electoral irregularities and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists, brought together several prominent opposition leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Mamata Banerjee and Farooq Abdullah.
Taking direct aim at the BJP, Yadav said the people of Uttar Pradesh knew how to welcome political leaders but were even better at bidding them farewell. He claimed that the BJP would face a major setback in the 2027 Assembly elections and would struggle to return to power in the state.
Describing the Ramlila Maidan gathering as the "Haldighati of democracy", the former Uttar Pradesh chief minister said the large turnout reflected the possibility of political change. He added that the movement to protect democracy would begin in Uttar Pradesh.
Yadav also accused the BJP of manipulating electoral processes and raised concerns over alleged deletions from voter lists in the state. Referring to reports of 1.27 lakh Hindu voters being removed from electoral rolls, he questioned the circumstances surrounding the deletions and demanded accountability from the Election Commission.
He further targeted the BJP's double-engine government slogan, referring to the recent Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council elections. Claiming that the people of Varanasi had delivered a setback to the ruling party, he described its performance as a "double zero".
The Samajwadi Party leader also referred to the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, arguing that the BJP had already received a political warning from Uttar Pradesh voters. He said the results of the 2027 Assembly elections would determine the next chapter of the state's political landscape.
The INDIA bloc rally primarily focused on the opposition's allegations of vote theft, concerns surrounding the SIR exercise and demands for the removal of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
With the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections approaching, Akhilesh Yadav's speech indicated that the INDIA bloc intends to make electoral transparency and voter rights central issues in its political campaign. India News +3
