A 25-year-old alleged interstate ATM-cutting gang leader wanted in multiple cash theft cases in Bihar was arrested in Haryana’s Nuh after evading police for nearly two years, officials said on Saturday.
Mohammad Mujeb, also known as Mujim, a resident of Bubalhedi village in Pinangwan, Nuh, was wanted in cases registered at Muffasil and Turkaulia police stations in Motihari’s East Champaran district. According to police, the cases date back to 2024, when Mujeb and his associates allegedly broke open ATM kiosks using gas cutters and escaped with several lakhs of rupees.
Bihar Police had announced a reward of ₹25,000 for information leading to his arrest after the accused remained untraced for two years.
Nuh Police Public Relations Officer Krishan Kumar said Bihar Police had approached their Haryana counterparts for assistance in locating the suspect. Following directions from Nuh Superintendent of Police Arpit Jain, a team led by Sub-Inspector Nikhil Kumar, SHO of Pinangwan police station, conducted raids at several suspected hideouts.
The operation eventually led to Mujeb’s arrest on Friday. A Bihar Police team from the Cybercrime Police Station in Motihari had reached Nuh and took custody of the accused for further legal proceedings.
Police described Mujeb as a habitual offender allegedly involved in several ATM cash thefts in Bihar and neighbouring states. Investigators also suspect that three to four other members of the gang are from Nuh.
According to Nuh Police, the gang members allegedly return to their hideouts in the district after carrying out crimes in other states. They reportedly try to avoid detection by keeping a low profile and staying away from mobile phones and social media.
Bihar Police teams had visited Nuh several times in the past while searching for the suspects, but the accused managed to evade arrest. Police said the latest operation finally resulted in Mujeb being caught.
The accused has now been handed over to Bihar Police, which is expected to conduct further investigation into the ATM theft cases and identify other members of the interstate gang.
