News Desk: Soumyajyoti Mandal, Kolkata:In a major political setback for the Aam Aadmi Party ahead of the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections, three rebel leaders from the party joined the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday.
The leaders are Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Chetan Singh Jouramajra. They formally joined the BJP at its headquarters in New Delhi in the presence of senior party leaders.
The political development comes amid growing internal dissent within the AAP following the announcement of its first list of 40 candidates for the upcoming Assembly elections. Pathanmajra and Jouramajra resigned from the party on Sunday, while former IPS officer Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh resigned from his Assembly membership on Monday before joining the BJP.
The rebel leaders had reportedly expressed dissatisfaction with the Bhagwant Mann-led government over several issues, including governance, the drug menace and the state's financial situation.
The BJP's move is being viewed as a significant political gain ahead of the crucial Punjab elections. Meanwhile, the defections have put the ruling AAP under fresh pressure as it prepares to defend its position in the state.
With the 2027 Assembly elections approaching, the latest political shift could add a new dimension to the electoral contest in Punjab.
