RG Kar Case: ‘Corruption Has Not Come Down’, Victim’s Mother Questions Probe, Targets CBI

BJP MLA and mother of the RG Kar rape-murder victim, Ratna Debnath, has expressed dissatisfaction over the progress of the CBI investigation. She has also alleged that corruption in West Bengal's medical colleges continues despite the change in government and plans to raise the issue with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.

Kolkata: Dissatisfaction over the investigation into the RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case has resurfaced, with BJP MLA and victim's mother Ratna Debnath expressing serious concerns over the pace of the probe. She has alleged that corruption in West Bengal's medical colleges has not declined despite the change in government.

Speaking to reporters on Sunday, Debnath questioned whether the change in political leadership had brought any real improvement to the state's healthcare administration. According to her, several individuals allegedly involved in corruption continue to remain influential even after the government changed.

"Even though there has been a change in government, the same people are still around. Corruption has not come down," she said.

Her remarks come amid continuing questions over the investigation into her daughter's rape and murder at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Debnath also expressed dissatisfaction with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), alleging that the agency had failed to make sufficient progress in bringing all those responsible to justice.

She made it clear that her family had never demanded a central investigation into the case. The probe was handed over to the CBI following an order by the Calcutta High Court, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the matter.

Questioning the agency's performance, Debnath said that if the investigators were unable to carry out their responsibilities effectively, they should step aside. Her strong remarks have once again brought the investigation and the demand for accountability into the spotlight.

The Panihati MLA also indicated that she would raise the issue directly with Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari. She said she wanted action against alleged corruption in medical colleges and claimed to have received several files containing information about suspected irregularities in different institutions.

Debnath said she intended to place these documents before the Chief Minister and seek a proper investigation into the allegations.

Notably, the victim's parents have repeatedly voiced their dissatisfaction with the progress of the case, maintaining that those they believe were involved have not yet been brought to justice.

Ratna Debnath joined the BJP ahead of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, arguing that a change in government was necessary to secure justice for her daughter. She subsequently contested and won the Panihati Assembly constituency.

Her latest statements have renewed attention on two major issues: the unresolved questions surrounding the RG Kar case and allegations of continuing corruption within West Bengal's medical education system.
