Soumyajyoti Mandal: The Supreme Court on Monday disposed of a batch of petitions seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into alleged theft and misappropriation of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, after the Uttar Pradesh government informed the court that a chargesheet had been filed in the case.
A three-judge bench headed by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and V. Mohana, directed the concerned Judicial Magistrate to proceed with the matter in accordance with the law. The court also permitted the petitioners to assist the magistrate, considering the public interest involved.
During the hearing, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the bench that the alleged misappropriation primarily took place during the counting of donations. According to the investigation, some accused individuals allegedly deposited the money in bank accounts or invested it in properties.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) reportedly identified 105 instances of unauthorised removal of cash and traced suspicious financial transactions linked to eight accused persons.
However, the Supreme Court clarified that it had expressed no opinion on the merits of the allegations, leaving the matter to be decided by the competent trial court.
