News Desk: Delhi-based content creator Amir Shokeen has come under widespread criticism after a viral video allegedly showed him making derogatory remarks about a young man from Tripura. Amid the controversy, Shokeen’s brother, Mohammed Wasim Raja, has claimed that their family severed ties with him 12 to 14 years ago and accused him of involvement in extortion and illegal property occupation.
Speaking about his brother, Raja described him as a “miscreant” and alleged that several cases had been registered against him. He also claimed that Shokeen had illegally acquired his property. These allegations have not been independently verified.
The controversy erupted after a video circulated on social media, purportedly showing Shokeen making offensive comments about a young man’s appearance and regional identity after learning that he was from Tripura.
In the footage, Shokeen allegedly refers to the youth as “Chinese” and compares his appearance to pop star Michael Jackson and Chinese President Xi Jinping. He also appears to mock the name of Tripura, make offensive gestures and touch the young man inappropriately during what was presented as an online comedy interaction.
The circumstances and location of the incident have not been independently established.
Following the backlash, Shokeen posted apology videos on Instagram. He claimed that the interaction was scripted and that the young man featured in the video was someone he knew. However, the incident has continued to draw criticism from political leaders and social media users.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju condemned the alleged racial abuse on Wednesday and said that the Delhi and Tripura Police would take action against the accused. He also criticised the delay in filing an official complaint and warned against allowing hatred and discriminatory behaviour to spread in society.
Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has also called for action. According to a statement shared by the Chief Minister’s Office, Saha directed the state’s Director General of Police to coordinate with the Delhi Police regarding the incident.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Police’s Intelligence Fusion and Strategic Operations (IFSO) unit is expected to investigate the matter. Officials said the Special Police Unit for North Eastern Region (SPUNER) had sent a formal request to the IFSO unit to examine the viral video.
The controversy has once again brought attention to concerns about racial discrimination against people from India’s northeastern states. The incident has also prompted calls for accountability over online content that allegedly targets individuals based on their appearance or regional identity.
The police investigation is expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the video and determine whether any legal action is warranted.
