Rohit Sharma has kept his plans for the 2027 ODI World Cup uncertain, saying there is still plenty of time before the tournament and he does not want to make a decision more than a year in advance.
The next ODI World Cup is scheduled to begin in October 2027 in South Africa, and Rohit will be well past 40 by then. Asked about his participation at an event in Mumbai on Thursday, the former India captain simply said, “October 2027 is still far away. We will see.”
Rohit’s comments come amid continuing speculation about his future in one-day cricket. Earlier, reports suggested that BCCI chief selector Ajit Agarkar had told Rohit that the management was not considering him for the 2027 World Cup. However, BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia later denied that such a conversation had taken place and reiterated that Rohit remained part of India’s ODI plans.
The veteran batter also responded to the outside noise after scoring a century against England at Lord’s in the third ODI of the series. Although his hundred could not prevent India from losing the series, the innings underlined his ability to contribute at the highest level.
Rohit has not publicly stated that he definitely wants to play the 2027 World Cup. At the same time, his recent actions have suggested that he remains keen to continue competing for India. He has worked on his fitness, lost weight and made himself available for international cricket.
Soon after his latest comments, Rohit shared an Instagram story showing himself beside his cricket kit, indicating that he continues to train.
His next opportunity could come later this month when India are scheduled to play a three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The squad for the series has not yet been announced, and the matches could provide another indication of Rohit’s place in India’s plans.
India still have a considerable number of ODIs to play before the 2027 World Cup, giving the team and Rohit time to assess the situation. However, fitness will remain an important factor. Rohit’s hamstring has troubled him in the past, and his age will also be closely monitored as the tournament approaches.
India are also preparing for the future, with Yashasvi Jaiswal being considered as a potential option if Rohit is unable to continue.
For now, Rohit is leaving the door open. His “we will see” response suggests that the decision on whether he will travel to South Africa in 2027 is still some way away.
