Harmanpreet Kaur has stepped down as captain of the Indian women’s cricket team across all three formats, bringing an end to a leadership era that lasted nearly a decade.
Harmanpreet announced her decision on social media on Tuesday following a BCCI review meeting in Guwahati. The meeting was attended by BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, Harmanpreet, vice-captain Smriti Mandhana and head coach Amol Muzumdar.
In an emotional statement, Harmanpreet said stepping down was not an easy decision. She reflected on the years of memories, sacrifices, criticism and achievements that came with leading the national team.
Harmanpreet first took over the captaincy on a full-time basis in 2016. Under her leadership, India achieved several significant milestones, including winning the ODI World Cup and the Asian Games gold medal.
However, her position as captain had come under increasing scrutiny in recent months. India's failure to reach the T20 World Cup semi-finals earlier this year, along with concerns over Harmanpreet's batting form, particularly in T20 cricket, intensified calls for a change in leadership.
Several former cricketers had suggested that vice-captain Smriti Mandhana should take over the captaincy and lead the team into a new phase.
Despite the criticism, Harmanpreet defended the decisions she made as captain, saying her priority had always been the team's progress. She said she had often put aside her own ambitions and individual performance for the benefit of the team and to give younger players opportunities to develop.
The 37-year-old also made it clear that her decision does not mean the end of her international career. She intends to continue playing for India and focus on her batting after giving up the additional responsibility of captaincy.
“Captaincy ends. The journey continues,” Harmanpreet said in her message, signalling her determination to continue contributing to Indian cricket.
Smriti Mandhana is widely expected to take over as India's new captain, although an official announcement from the BCCI is awaited.
Harmanpreet's departure from the leadership role marks the beginning of a new chapter for Indian women's cricket. After years of carrying the responsibility of leading the side, she will now have the opportunity to concentrate solely on her performances as a player.
Her captaincy era will be remembered for both major victories and difficult moments, but her decision to step aside could provide the Indian team with a fresh leadership direction ahead of its upcoming international assignments.
