A 16-year-old girl was allegedly gang-raped and murdered by four teenagers in Delhi’s Swaroop Nagar, with the crime coming to light after her highly decomposed body was found in a field, police said.
The body was discovered on Sunday morning near Kushak Road. According to investigators, local residents alerted the police after noticing the body in the open field. The girl’s body had suffered multiple injuries and was badly decomposed, making identification difficult initially.
Police said the post-mortem examination confirmed rape and found several wounds on the victim’s body. Investigators registered a case involving murder, rape and destruction of evidence.
The police investigation focused on identifying the people who had taken the victim to the area. More than 50 CCTV cameras around the field were examined. During the investigation, officers noticed a tempo moving near the location around the suspected time of the crime.
Although the vehicle’s registration number was not clearly visible, local enquiries helped police trace the tempo. Its driver told investigators that his 17-year-old younger brother regularly used the vehicle. CCTV footage also showed four boys inside the tempo.
Police subsequently traced the vehicle to Khadda Colony in Swaroop Nagar and detained four suspects. They were identified as 19-year-old Shivam Ganesh and three minors aged 17 and 16. Police said two knives allegedly linked to the crime and clothing worn by the accused were recovered.
Investigators said the 16-year-old victim had gone to meet the 17-year-old suspect, whom she reportedly knew. Police allege that he sexually assaulted her before calling his friends. The investigators further allege that the group later took her to a field, where she was stabbed multiple times before the body was left there.
Police are still examining whether the sexual assault took place inside the tempo or at the field.
According to investigators, the victim was a school dropout who had moved to Swaroop Nagar several years ago. She was reportedly looking for work to support her parents and was living separately from them. Her parents had not filed a missing-person complaint because they were unaware that she had gone out and had been missing for two days.
Police said further investigation is underway to establish the complete sequence of events, determine the individual role of each accused and examine forensic and technical evidence. Officers are also checking whether anyone else was involved.
