Passengers travelling light from Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport can now use dedicated entry gates at all three terminals, allowing eligible travellers to bypass the regular check-in counters.
The new service, called Express@DEL, was launched on Friday by Delhi airport deputy CEO Manomad Rai. It is aimed at passengers who have already completed web check-in and have an e-boarding pass.
The facility is available to travellers carrying only hand baggage or no checked baggage. Eligible passengers can head directly to the designated entry gate, instead of going through the standard check-in counters, and proceed towards security screening.
Each of the three terminals has been assigned a separate gate for Express@DEL passengers. Travellers departing from Terminal 1 can use Gate 5, while passengers at Terminal 2 can use Gate 1. Those flying from Terminal 3 can enter through Gate 2.
To use the facility, passengers must complete their web check-in before reaching the airport and keep their e-boarding pass ready. They can then proceed directly to the designated forecourt gate for their terminal and move towards security.
The dedicated entry system is expected to make the airport process more convenient for passengers who do not need to visit a check-in counter.
The development comes as authorities continue to introduce measures aimed at improving passenger and cargo movement through Indian airports.
Last month, the Centre expanded its air cargo transhipment network by adding four domestic and two international stations. Under the revised framework, transhipment cargo does not need to undergo re-screening at the transit station.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu had flagged off the expanded phase of the transhipment framework at Delhi International Airport Limited’s Transhipment Excellence Centre at Terminal 2 on August 19.
The initiative followed a Proof of Concept for domestic-to-international transhipment on the Chennai-Delhi-Frankfurt route, which began in June.
Following the successful trial, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad, Mumbai and Hyderabad were added as domestic origin stations. London and Copenhagen were also included as international destinations.
The civil aviation ministry has said the framework will be expanded further to cover international-to-international and international-to-domestic transhipment operations.
For air passengers, however, the latest Express@DEL service offers a separate convenience at the airport, particularly for those travelling without checked-in luggage.
