News Desk: A 23-year-old Indian worker from Jharkhand’s Palamu district has reportedly been lodged in a jail in Dubai for the past four months, prompting his family to seek government intervention to bring him back to India.
Shashi Kumar Paswan, who went to the United Arab Emirates in 2025 to work for a private company, allegedly landed in trouble after attempting to leave his job and arrange his return home through a travel agent. His family claims that he was trapped in the process and is now seeking legal assistance for his release.
Shashi’s father, Lalan Paswan, a resident of Dadra village, submitted an application at Hussinabad police station on Monday, requesting the district administration to intervene. Palamu Superintendent of Police Kapil Choudhary confirmed that the application had been received and forwarded to higher authorities.
According to his father, Shashi wanted to return to India to attend his sister’s wedding, which was scheduled for June 26. He allegedly paid a travel agent to arrange his journey home but was subsequently detained.
“My son went to Dubai in 2025 to work for a private company on a contract basis. The family had fixed his sister’s wedding for June 26, and Shashi wanted to attend it. He paid an agent to return home, but was trapped,” Lalan said.
Police officials said Shashi was reportedly jailed after allegedly contacting an agent to arrange his return, leaving his job without properly informing his employer and remaining absent from work for seven consecutive days. The circumstances surrounding his detention and the precise legal grounds for his continued imprisonment have not been independently established.
Family appeals for government intervention
Lalan said the family initially waited for four months because Shashi had assured them that he would be released soon. However, when he remained in jail, they decided to approach the authorities for help.
His wife, Sumitra, also appealed for intervention, alleging that her husband had been trapped by the agent. She urged the authorities to arrange legal assistance and facilitate his return to India.
The family is now hoping that the district administration and the Indian government will take up the matter with the appropriate authorities in the UAE.
The case has raised concerns for the family about the difficulties Indian workers can face when employment disputes and arrangements to return home lead to legal complications abroad. For now, Shashi’s relatives are waiting for official intervention, hoping that he will receive legal support and be able to reunite with his family.
