New Delhi 02 Nov : India’s indigenous shipbuilding sector is set to receive a significant boost with the Next Generation Corvettes (NGCs) project for the Indian Navy, which is expected to generate more than 532 lakh person-days of employment across shipyards and ancillary industries over the next ten years.
According to information shared by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), the project is expected to create approximately 72 lakh person-days of employment in shipyards and another 460 lakh person-days in ancillary industries and Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
The initiative aims to strengthen collaboration among Defence Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs), private shipyards and Indian industrial partners, including MSMEs, thereby expanding the country's domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem.
The project will also promote the use of Made-in-India materials and equipment, indigenous technologies, and Indian technical skills and expertise, contributing to the development of domestic manufacturing capabilities.
The initiative is being viewed as an important step towards achieving self-reliance in defence production under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat vision, while supporting the government's Make in India initiative.
Over the coming decade, the project is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, strengthen industrial participation and provide fresh momentum to India's indigenous naval shipbuilding capabilities.
