Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s much-anticipated red-ball leadership debut got off to a disappointing start as the 15-year-old was dismissed for just eight runs during East Zone’s Duleep Trophy 2026 quarter-final against North East Zone in Bengaluru on Sunday.
Sooryavanshi, who is leading East Zone in the quarter-final, began his innings with confidence after North East Zone won the toss and elected to field at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground 2.
The young batter wasted little time in showing his aggressive intent. He struck pacer Bishworjit Konthoujam for two consecutive boundaries in the second over, briefly giving East Zone supporters reason to expect a substantial contribution from the teenager.
However, Konthoujam quickly turned the contest in his favour. The bowler came back strongly and dismissed Sooryavanshi with the final delivery of the over, ending the youngster’s innings at eight runs.
The early dismissal was a setback for East Zone, who were reduced to two wickets soon after being asked to bat first. At the latest update, East Zone had moved to 66/2 after 14.1 overs, with Kumar Kushagra batting on 23 and Sudip Gharami unbeaten on 20.
Konthoujam was among the early wicket-takers for North East Zone, while Pheiroijam Jotin Singh also picked up a wicket.
Sooryavanshi’s appearance attracted considerable attention because of his age and the growing expectations surrounding his career. The teenager has already made headlines for his performances in domestic cricket and has been regarded as one of India’s most exciting young batting prospects.
The Duleep Trophy quarter-final provides another important opportunity for him to develop his red-ball game, particularly in the longer format where patience and concentration are as important as attacking strokes.
Meanwhile, the other quarter-final between North Zone and West Zone was also underway on Sunday. Both matches are part of the 2026 Duleep Trophy knockout stage, with teams competing for a place in the next round.
For Sooryavanshi, the early dismissal will be a learning experience in what is still the beginning of his red-ball leadership journey. Despite the setback, East Zone will look to build a strong first-innings total and put pressure on North East Zone as the quarter-final progresses.
The match remains an important test of the young squad’s ability to respond after losing early wickets.
