A 25-year-old man has been arrested in Uttarakhand’s Selakui for allegedly stabbing his neighbour to death following an argument over an invitation to his daughter’s first birthday party, police said on Wednesday.
The incident took place on September 21 in Jamanpur, where the accused, identified as Jitendra Kumar, and the deceased, Rajpal, lived as tenants in the same building.
According to Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Pramendra Dobhal, both men were allegedly under the influence of alcohol when an argument broke out over Rajpal not being invited to Jitendra’s daughter’s first birthday celebration.
During the dispute, Rajpal allegedly slapped Jitendra. Police said Jitendra then allegedly attacked him with a knife, stabbing him in the chest, before fleeing the scene.
The Selakui police station received information about the incident through the police control room. Officers reached the location and found Rajpal seriously injured. He was taken to Subharti Hospital in a 108 ambulance, where doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Following a complaint from Rajpal’s family, police registered a case against Jitendra under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which deals with murder.
Police formed teams to trace the accused. Jitendra was arrested on Tuesday from Mental Hospital Road in Sahaspur.
Investigators also recovered the knife allegedly used in the attack at the accused’s instance, police said.
During interrogation, Jitendra reportedly told investigators that he had an earlier dispute with Rajpal and that this was the reason he had not invited him to the birthday celebration.
Police are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. The case has brought attention to how a personal dispute between neighbours escalated into a fatal confrontation.
The accused will face further legal proceedings in connection with the murder case.
