Security forces on Saturday recovered the remains of a Pakistani Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terrorist along with a US-made M4 carbine from the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir’s Doda district, officials said.
The recovery was made during an operation in the high-altitude Seoj Dhar forest area, near a glacier. The area connects Doda’s Bhaderwah valley with neighbouring Udhampur and Kathua districts and is considered difficult terrain because of its high altitude and dense forest cover.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police confirmed the recovery in a post on X. According to the police, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Doda, Rashtriya Rifles (RR) and the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jointly retrieved the remains of the Pakistani terrorist, who had earlier been neutralised during a joint operation.
A night-enabled M4 carbine was also recovered from the site. The weapon is an automatic rifle manufactured in the United States and is commonly associated with military and special operations units.
Officials said the identity of the slain terrorist has not yet been established. The recovery of the remains and the weapon is expected to provide security agencies with further clues as they investigate the earlier operation and possible links to cross-border militant activities.
Meanwhile, the State Investigation Agency (SIA), Jammu, conducted search operations at five locations in Jammu and Kashmir as part of a separate investigation into alleged secessionist propaganda and radicalisation activities.
The searches were carried out in the Mandi and Surankote areas of Poonch district and in the Ramnagar area of Udhampur district. Investigators are examining both online and offline activities, including the use of social media platforms allegedly operated from across the border.
An official said that during the investigation, certain individuals were allegedly found communicating with suspicious persons located across the Line of Control (LoC) or international border.
The SIA searches were aimed at collecting and verifying material evidence related to these alleged communications and activities. Officials are examining whether the individuals involved had any connection with networks promoting secessionist narratives or facilitating radicalisation.
The latest developments come amid continued security operations in Jammu and Kashmir aimed at identifying militant networks and disrupting attempts to promote extremist or separatist activities.
The recovery in Doda is particularly significant because of the difficult mountainous terrain in the region, where security forces have previously conducted operations against militants.
Further investigation is underway. Security agencies are expected to examine the recovered weapon, the location of the remains and other available evidence to establish the identity of the deceased terrorist and determine the circumstances surrounding his earlier neutralisation.
Authorities are also continuing to investigate suspected cross-border communications and the possible involvement of individuals in activities linked to radicalisation and secessionist narratives.
