Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Raut has alleged that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) FIR in the Disha Salian death case is part of a political conspiracy aimed at damaging the reputation of the Thackeray family.
Raut’s comments came after the CBI registered an FIR in connection with the death of Salian, who had briefly worked as the manager of late Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput. The case has remained politically sensitive since Salian’s death in June 2020, which was followed by Rajput’s death less than a week later.
Speaking to reporters, Raut questioned the manner in which the case was being discussed publicly. He said the Bombay High Court had directed the CBI to investigate the matter but had specifically stated that no individual should be named at this stage. According to Raut, despite this, names were being discussed in the media.
Raut described the latest development as a “political conspiracy” and alleged that the investigation was being used to target Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray. He claimed that the Thackeray family was being deliberately targeted because of its political position and influence in Maharashtra.
The FIR itself does not name any accused, in accordance with the Bombay High Court’s directions on a petition filed by Disha Salian’s father. The CBI investigation will look into allegations surrounding Salian’s death, including claims of gang rape, murder and an alleged attempt to cover up the circumstances of her death.
Raut also alleged that the timing of the investigation was politically significant. He claimed that the issue was being used to divert public attention from the agitation led by Maratha quota activist Manoj Jarange. He further alleged that pressure was being put on Shiv Sena (UBT) to support the proposed delimitation bill in Parliament.
Disha Salian, 28, died on June 8, 2020, after falling from the 12th floor of a residential building in Mumbai’s Malad area. Her death was initially recorded as an accidental death and was later treated as suicide.
Her death attracted renewed public attention after Sushant Singh Rajput was found dead at his Bandra residence on June 14, 2020. The close timing of the two deaths led to widespread speculation about a possible connection between the cases.
The CBI’s latest FIR has now brought the Salian case back into the political spotlight. While the agency’s investigation is expected to examine the allegations and circumstances surrounding her death, Raut has strongly questioned the political context in which the case has resurfaced.
The investigation is still at an early stage, and the allegations mentioned in the FIR will have to be examined by the investigating agency. No accused has been named in the FIR so far.
