A shocking attack on a 15-year-old schoolgirl inside her classroom in Andhra Pradesh has taken a disturbing turn after police revealed that the accused was her own maternal uncle. The 21-year-old man, identified as Hemanth alias Dummu, allegedly harassed the teenager in the name of love for some time before attacking her with a chainsaw.
The incident took place on Saturday morning at a government school in Raptadu, in Anantapur district, while a Class 10 mathematics lesson was underway. According to police, the accused entered the classroom at around 10.30 am and suddenly attacked the girl with a mechanised chainsaw in front of her classmates.
The teenager suffered severe injuries to her face, neck, back and abdomen. Her right hand was reportedly almost severed during the attack. Another girl student was also injured when she attempted to intervene and protect her classmate.
Police identified the accused as Hemanth, a resident of Nagaluru village in Sri Sathya Sai district. He had reportedly been staying with his elder sister, who is the victim's mother, at Ayyavaripalle village in Anantapur district.
According to preliminary police findings, the accused had allegedly been pursuing the teenager despite her unwillingness to accept his advances. The victim's family also claimed that he had repeatedly harassed her in the name of love before carrying out the attack.
A teacher who witnessed the incident described the horrifying moments inside the classroom. She said the accused suddenly entered the room carrying a noisy instrument and attacked the girl before fleeing the school premises. The attack triggered panic among students, with several children screaming and attempting to escape.
The accused was subsequently arrested by police at Dharmavaram Railway Station. Investigators have registered an attempt-to-murder case and are examining CCTV footage, eyewitness statements and other evidence to establish the circumstances behind the attack.
The injured teenager was initially admitted to Anantapur Government General Hospital, where she underwent surgery. As her condition became critical, she was shifted to a super-speciality hospital in Bengaluru for advanced treatment. Another injured student is also receiving medical attention.
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu strongly condemned the incident and directed officials to ensure the best possible medical treatment for the victims. He also instructed the police to take stringent legal action against the accused.
The incident has triggered widespread outrage, raising serious questions about the safety of children inside educational institutions and the security arrangements at schools.
