A 29-year-old junior engineer associated with a New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) project was arrested after allegedly firing two rounds into the air in central Delhi’s Rajender Nagar early Thursday, police said.
The incident took place around 2am near Bada Bazar. Police received information that a man was allegedly firing from a white Maruti Baleno. A team was sent to the spot and apprehended the suspect, identified as Gagan Deep Singh, a resident of Old Rajender Nagar and originally from Kankhal in Uttarakhand.
According to police, Singh was allegedly under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central) Rohit Rajbir Singh said a breathalyser or blood alcohol test recorded 235 mg of alcohol per 100 ml of blood.
Preliminary investigation suggests that Singh allegedly fired the rounds into the air without any apparent reason. Police said he appeared to be heavily intoxicated when he was detained.
A licensed .32-bore revolver was recovered from Singh, along with two live cartridges and two empty cartridges. Five additional live cartridges were reportedly found in the firearm’s holster.
Police said the weapon was legally licensed. However, firing a firearm in a public place and allegedly doing so while intoxicated has led to a criminal case against the accused.
A case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Arms Act. Investigators are now examining the circumstances surrounding the incident and trying to establish why Singh allegedly opened fire.
The incident occurred in the early hours when the area had relatively limited movement, but the firing reportedly prompted concern among local residents and resulted in police intervention.
Officials are also examining the circumstances in which the licensed weapon was being carried and used. Police are expected to question the accused further as part of the investigation.
The incident has once again highlighted concerns surrounding the handling and use of licensed firearms in public places, particularly when the person carrying the weapon is allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
Police said further investigation is underway and additional details will emerge as the inquiry progresses.
